Easton, Massachusetts

The site is located at what was once Wayside, the estate of former Massachusetts Lieutenant Governor Louis A. Frothingham and his wife Mary Ames Frothingham. A portion of the estate was given to the Town of Easton for town offices preserving the main estate house and some of the most beautiful portions of the grounds for public use.
One of the most outstanding features of the estate grounds was the rose garden, created by Mrs. Frothingham in the 1920’s and 1930’s with the assistance of Landscape Architect Herbert Kellaway and rose expert Henry W. Foote. A large section of the rose garden was destroyed by the construction of Whitman’s Brook Drive, and the remainder has fallen into disrepair thorough a lack of maintenance.
The proposed project seeks to rehabilitate the remaining portion of the historic rose garden, preserving the remaining historic elements on the garden and interpreting the historic design in a manner that can be maintained with a combination of municipal and volunteer efforts. The project included historic, preparation of a restoration plan, cost estimates, and an application for CPA funding.
